Decorating a Condo Living Room: Tips and Tricks for a Beautiful Home

So you've just moved into your first condo and now have a living room to decorate. It's probably the smallest space in your home, but that doesn't mean it can't be beautiful! Here are some ideas for making your small condo living room feel like a cozy oasis.

Types of furniture

A big, beautiful couch might be more than you can afford, so don't think you have to go for the most expensive option. Just as a small sofa works well in a room that's half an apartment, a room that's smaller won't look right with a huge overstuffed chair. Instead, you can always opt for a sofa with plenty of pillows to make it a comfy reading space. Comfy chairs are a good fit in a small space, as are oversized tables. Remember to bring in the light and let the natural elements from the surrounding environment add to your living room atmosphere. When decorating a smaller space, consider using smaller pieces that will fit the style and budget of your condo. Fabric Fabric can take a small space and turn it into a cozy, inviting living room.

Decorating Tips

Measure Yourself First When you're looking at the outside of the house, you can't go wrong with concrete block walls. Even small houses use these to separate the master bedroom and bath, bedrooms, and common areas. Placing shelves in your entryway is a great way to display items in your living room and give the room some instant style. You can display vases, books, small plants, and small gifts. Don't be afraid to use walls for wall art. Just make sure you hang something on a vertical surface, like the walls or ceiling, instead of a horizontal surface like a table top. Do something different with your couch. A chaise lounge can be dressed up for a formal evening by adding pillows and maybe a throw.

Create a focal point

The first thing you need to do is choose a focal point for your living room. Many people choose to add a fireplace in their living rooms. Although this may be the most beautiful room in your condo, it can also be the biggest detractor to the overall ambience of your condo. Fireplaces are expensive and may make your condo room feel much smaller. They can also use a lot of electricity. If you don't have a fireplace or don't want to use one, you could create a focal point with a focal lamp or candle. Instead of using an expensive, modern standing lamp, install a bright, narrow table lamp, and fill the lamp with glass vases filled with flowers. Be creative with storage A condo's closet isn't usually the most interesting place to store clothes, toys, or books.

Make a statement with color

While I love that some of our living rooms are neutral, because who doesn't love a solid palette, I have to admit that there are times when I just want to yell, "LOOK AT ME!" I think that's a normal reaction to owning a condo and not having a backyard. So don't be afraid to break out your color wheel, grab a bunch of paint swatches, and try mixing a color you're unfamiliar with in a bowl! Another way to make a statement in a small space is to surround yourself with statement furniture. Try out a cheery kitchen chair, matching coffee table, or a new oversized rug to bring some personality to the room. Sometimes it's as simple as finding the perfect accessories to give your new home some life. I love this mustard-colored area rug that brings warmth and a little color to the space.

Choose the right lighting

Indoor lighting is key in any living room. You don't need huge amounts of light, but if you do choose a bright bulb, make sure it has a CFL or Edison bulb. CFL's have a shorter lifespan than incandescent bulbs, but they last longer and use a fraction of the electricity. Edison bulbs are energy efficient and they use almost no electricity so there's no difference in your bills. You can use CFL's for decorative purposes or on other small appliances, too. Light colours Although warm colours such as yellow and orange are lovely in a small space, most homes in the winter tend to have cool colours, so light-coloured grey or beige are always great. Even beige will work in a small space, as long as it has no dark-grey or brown tints.

Keep your space organized

Take a good look around your condo's living space and try to create a decorating plan. For the living room, you might want to focus on furniture, decor, and accessories, rather than walls. If you have walls, you could use them to highlight different objects, whether that's by hanging photos, or designing a piece of art, and framing it. Try to get all your furniture and accessories in one area to make it look more attractive. Invest in furniture You can use your living room as a backdrop for any kind of design, but if you're going for a more minimalist look, opt for furniture that is easy to move around and can help to bring focus to the focal points of the space. Other options that might help to add drama and interest include some mirrors and tables that look like antique pieces.
